“Art goes both ways. Writers tell stories & think they mean one thing. Readers take stories into their own lives & they mean something else.”
Neil Gaiman
English: Our Intent for the subject.
At Walter Evans CE Primary and Nursery School, we intend to ensure that all children leave us as confident, competent readers and writers. We want our children to develop a love of language and literature alongside the skills required to continue to access both enjoyable and challenging texts from around the world and write beautifully and technically for a range of purposes. We believe that English is at the centre of education, therefore our whole school curriculum, and all of our topic-based learning, is based around the enjoyment of high quality, engaging and exciting texts.
Our vision for reading
At Walter Evans CE Primary and Nursery School, our aim is to ensure that all children leave us as confident, competent readers. We want our children to develop a love of language and literature alongside the skills required to continue to access both enjoyable and challenging texts. Therefore, we have planned a curriculum which has been carefully targeted to guarantee that every child makes excellent progress by experiencing a wide breadth of quality texts throughout their primary education and receiving regular opportunities and experiences to help them develop a joy of reading.
We believe that reading is at the centre of education, therefore our whole school curriculum, and all of our topic based learning, is based around high quality, engaging and exciting texts. Reading is at the heart of all that we do.
Reading Progression Grid How We Teach Reading
Walter Evans Virtual Library
As part of a new initiative to help provide a range of sources for reading at home, we have created a 'virtual library'!
If you click on the image of our virtual bookshelves, then click on any of the books, it will take you to a video of that book being read aloud.
We hope to create a new virtual library each month and, as we continue, we will hopefully begin to use videos of staff and pupils from around school reading the books too.
Happy reading!
