Walter Evans Church of England Primary & Nursery School

"Mathematics has beauty and romance. It’s not a boring place to be, the mathematical world. It’s an extraordinary place; it’s worth spending time there."
Marcus du Sautoy - British mathematician

Maths: Our Intent for the subject.

At Walter Evans, our intention is to provide all children with full access to a broad and ambitious mathematics curriculum, enabling them to achieve confidence and competence in mathematical fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving.

Our approach aims for pupils to acquire a deep, long-term, secure, and adaptable understanding of the subject. The mathematics curriculum at Walter Evans is carefully designed to build sequentially in small steps which allow children to make connections to prior learning. Each unit and each year group have defined endpoints that all children are expected to achieve which is in line with the National Curriculum and results in increasing proportions of pupils attaining true proficiency in primary mathematics, ready for their secondary school education, whilst making good progress.

How it fits within our school vision.

Our school vision is rooted in the Christian faith. As a proud Church of England school, our vision is underpinned by the Church of England’s vision for education. This vision identifies four interlinking aims for all our pupils and, at its heart, lies LOVE (Luke 10:27).

It is this LOVE for God, for our neighbours and ourselves, that forms our Christian foundation to underpin all that we do.

School Vision Statement

At Walter Evans we believe in a broad and balanced curriculum where all subjects are valued. A broad and balanced curriculum will equip our children with a breadth of knowledge and skills in all areas of the curriculum. We aim for our pupils to ‘Persevere, be curious and inspired through their learning’.
